Develop an idle stop ECU for motorcycles!

Background

The demand for greener motorcycles has been rapidly growing in the market, and today environment-conscious features are the top priority in product development.
In accordance with this trend, we have been working with Honda Motor Co., Ltd. in their electric scooter development project, and in December 2010, we proudly released Power Drive Unit especially designed for 2-wheel EVs (please read Mission 5 of Execute Corporate Mission!).
We have successfully developed two types of high-efficiency battery chargers for 2-wheel EVs - regular and quick types - in a very short period of time. This product was developed by our two operation departments working in close coordination to combine their knowledge in power circuit and module technology, which are the specialty of these departments.
In this report, we would like to introduce you to this newly developed charger for 2-wheel EV, a popular choice for the environment-conscious vehicles.

Expected effects

The CO2 emission from 2-wheel EVs, even including the loss from power generation, transmission and charging, is roughly half of what is released from petrol-fueled vehicles (Shindengen data). It is gaining popularity as an eco-friendly vehicle for its non-NOx and non-CO emission during driving.
By providing battery chargers with higher efficiency (shorter charging time) in smaller and lighter design, we are contributing to the higher performance of 2-wheel EVs and subsequently to the promotion of their business use. We hope our new technologies will lead to increase in 2-wheel EV users and greener environment.

A passionate message from the developers

For developing this product, we combined the high-efficiency power circuit technology and mounting structure (module) technology, developed over the years at our two departments. This enabled us to improve the capacity, while shrinking the size of the charger, and to introduce our first portable battery charger recharger for EVs.
We will continue our effort to offer higher-efficiency, lower price, smaller size and better safety, so there will be more 2-wheel EV users and consequently more Shindengen products around the world. Our goal is to further enhance Shindengen brand name as a leading manufacturer of electric components for 2-wheel vehicles.
