Develop an idle stop ECU for motorcycles!

Background

Various kinds of “eco motorcycles” are being developed in order to reduce CO2 emissions that contribute to global warming. Electric scooters representing those “eco motorcycles” offer economic efficiency. The running cost is as low as about one-fifth of that of gasoline motorcycles. Furthermore, electric scooters achieve excellent environmental performance with zero CO2 emissions while riding. This is now receiving a lot of attention in the market for “eco motorcycles”. In December 2010, we commercialized the Power Drive Unit (PDU) that controls the drive motors used in electric scooters with Honda Motor Co., Ltd. Shindengen is working to strengthen its own efforts to respond to the needs of the rapidly growing market for “eco-vehicles” and “eco motorcycles”.

PDU executing CPU operation processing based on data from various sensors and the battery management system provide faster and more precise motor control. Inverters in PDU with protection (over-voltage detection, over-current detection) offers high-power driving.

Expected effects

PDU developed by Shindengen create optimal torque (driving power) for any driving condition through its motor power phase and PWM switching control and, while reducing energy usage during operation, also uses electricity generated by the motor during braking or other reductions in speed to recharge and replenish the battery. In addition, with its low-loss, high thermal dissipation, PDU are also able to achieve compact size and light weight.
Even when taking into account the energy loss rate for power generation, transmission and charging, electric scooters still only emit about half as much CO2 as gasoline motorcycles. As Shindengen is playing a part in the development of energy-saving electric scooters, we look forward to contributing to the protection of the environment through the expansion of the EV market.

A passionate message from the developers

To enable high-power driving, we developed PDU that utilize the advantages of idling stop ECU. The fact that we were at last able to develop PDU to the point of commercial marketability, overcoming heat generation, switching noise and numerous other problems associated with high-power driving motor, in the year 2010, a year that can rightly be called the year in which EV first came into common use, greatly heightens the sense of accomplishment we feel as designers.

In the future, it is our sincere hope that we may continue to make further improvements in the circuitry and structure of PDU in response to the needs of the market and our customers while simultaneously improving environmental performance and lowering costs, ultimately contributing to a greater distribution of electric scooters and to the expansion of the electric scooters market.
