Develop an idle stop ECU for motorcycles!

Background

 As small motorcycles keep spreading as a daily means of transportation mainly in Asian markets, the demand for environmental performance, including improved fuel efficiency, is increasing. To help motorcycle manufacturers develop eco-vehicles to meet market needs, we have developed and commercialized an engine control unit (ECU) with an idle stop function.

Product Introduction

 "Idle stop system" is a system to stop an engine when the vehicle stops, for example, at a traffic light in a street, and to start it again with a starter motor when the vehicle restarts.
 The idle stop ECU we have developed is a high-level, multifunction control unit which integrates engine control, starter motor control, charge control, fuel injection control, etc. Our product uses a starter ACG (three-phase AC generator) as a starter motor to start the engine, and then as a generator once the engine has started.
 Previously, brush motors were used as starter motors. On the other hand, this system uses a brushless motor controlled by a three-phase MOSFET full-bridge circuit. This solves the life-span problem of brushes worn by the engines that repeat stopping and restarting. As a result, our ECU makes starter control possible almost permanently.

Expected effects

 Our idle stop ECU improves fuel efficiency by stopping the engine during idling. When it is restarting, the ECU starts the engine instantly and smoothly with a starter motor. This improves restarting performance from idle stop. If the vehicle is stopped for 5% of its running time, the system should improve fuel efficiency at the same rate (5%).
 Moreover, by incorporating the electronic fuel injection ignition device using high-precision MPU, the system can obtain data from various sensors to optimize injection timing and quantity. As a result, our ECU improves fuel efficiency even while the vehicle is running.
 In addition, it has a variety of ingenious designs, including low-loss, heat release structure, to apply high current from the three-phase MOSFET bridge circuit to the starter ACG. Compared with existing products, current-carrying performance has gone up by 30%, external size has been decreased by 10%, and its weight has been reduced by 2%. It is true that the ECU saves energy not only by its idle stop function, but also reduction in size and weight.
